Ability Diversity

What?
  • A unit to better understand the experiences of People in our immediate and global community that have physical impairments, neurological differences and mental disorders.
  • An opportunity to develop empathy and make tangible suggestions and/or provide information to help make BCS and our homes more inclusvise physical spaces.
Why?
  • Because we live in an ever changing world and it is our RESPONSIBILITY as christians to listen, learn and Act so that people might know and feel the love that god has promised to All.
  • we have to actively fight Bias, Discrimination, and misinformation by better educating ourselves.
this is something BCS is COMMITTED to doing. See the document below in the inclusion unit (or click here) That was distributed to all teachers to display in our classes.
How?
  • WE WILL START WITH A HANDS ON EXPERIENCE AROUND BCS OR AT YOUR HOME
    • CLICK HERE FOR THE INSTRUCTIONS AND ACCOMANYING QUESTIONS
  • We will celebrate creatvies by making posters to sharE around BCS, just like we have done with BHM and Asian americans
    • Click here for the document or check teams
  • We will also have an assignment to Make Suggestions to BCS to improve the physical spaces on our campus
Below are several websites to help you further understand ability diversity.

A very informative article with video and book suggestions.

INCLUSION

What?
  • A discussion about the rise in anti-Asian crime and discrimination.
    • We will use this site/video to guide our discussion during class, written and verbal.
  • An opportunity to create a visual that will hang in our school and remind us of the importance of inclusion.
How?
  • We will create Celebration poster the same way we did for BHM.
    • You can use the template from that assignment or create your own poster.
    • After you chose the maker you want to celebrate, include:
      • Maker's NAme, Their website, A blurb from their Bio, QR code, Picture of them, Picture/s of their work, And "CELEBRATING ASIan American Creatives"
Why?
  • Because we live in an ever changing world and it is our RESPONSIBILITY as christians to listen, learn and Act so that people might know and feel the love that god has promised to All.
  • we have to actively fight Bias and Discrimination.

If you use the template from teams (or the link), go master slide to change the bottom to say "Celebrating Asian American Creatives"

HOw was that made?

What?
  • A chance to see how things are made, by taking them apart.
    • This is not a demolition!
    • You will carefully "unmake" various products by carefully taking the parts and pieces out/off
    • We will save every piece and create a display of all the parts when we finish
WHY?
  • Sometimes the best way to figure out how to make something is to take apart what someone else made. Understanding the process in reserve is a great way to figure out more detail and INTRICACY.
  • Also scavenging is one of the best ways to feed the Maker Mindset.
    • A new zipper costs $3, but a used bag with 6 zippers cost $6. If you are willing to think creatively and critically, taking parts from other things can be very beneficial.
  • It is a low stress way to engage with Maker's thinking. It is also a TACTICAL way to engage you in new tools and processes.
How?
  • With precision and care!
    • Remember, this is not a demolition.
  • Tools will be provided at all the various objects.
    • We will rotate around to them throughout the class. Your job is to actively try and take thing apart.
  • Pay attention to details and the "how"
  • Try to IMAGINE how you could make something new out of all the parts you have.
  • KEEP EVERYTHING!
    • each object will have its own box and all part should be kept in there.
  • We will display the pieces diagram style at the end of the project.
When?
  • Students should spend and DOCUMENT 3 Hours
    • This is 2 block periods of taking things apart.
    • REMEMBER to take pictures!!
    • SEE Evidence Log FOR HOW TO PROPERLY SPEND/DOCUMENT YOUR HOURS
BElow is an example of what our displays will look like when completed

MY CUlture...

Why?
  • An opportunity to get to know each other and our cultural identities
  • a chance to practice "Making"
  • A Place to explore identity and the factors that contribute to how we see ourselves as well as how others see us.
  • A step towards empathy and understanding of others and how their lived EXPERIENCES shape the ways they interact with the world as well as the way the world treats them.
WhAT?
  • Something small you make that represents a part of your culture. It's meant to be a fairly quick project.
    • It could be a food dish, an object that represents something, an object that supports a part of your culture..... We will brainstorm ideas in class together.
HOW?
  • Thinking about our conversation in class on Cultural Identity,  Fill out the questions in your teams assignment. We will share them in small groups during class.
  • WE will follow up this time of sharing with CONVERSATIONS about our deeper identities
    • This deeper conversation in conjunction with the object you make will guide us to how we can support each other throughout the semester.
  • You will upload evidence of the process of making this object. This is the same process for the whole semester.
    • This includes 5-10 photos and
    • Your reflection questions
    • Turned in on Teams Assignments
Examples
There are so many possibilites and directions you can take. Start with the culture presentation you filled out. Look for ideas or cues from that, It is something small that can help inform what you will share  in class. think about what you want people to know about you.
  • Remember all these things shape your culture:
    • Music, Art, religion, Ethnicity (AMerican, Ethiopian...), Your abilities or Disabilities, Holidays, Celebrations, Customs, Traditions, Humor, Ways of communicating, language, Clothing, food...
These eXamples represent
traditions: Dream cAtcher
Food: Italian Wedding Cookies
Ethnicity: 3-d Paper Flag
Religion: Jesus Fish Keychain
Disabilites: Stress Ball (Something I use when I have ANxiety Attacks)
Anything from obvious to more abstract works! Be creative!

Evidence log

Why?
  • ACCOUNTABILITY for the REQUIRED Class time
    • This is a good habit for when you become a professional. Being able to organize and show justification of your time is an important part of many jobs.
  • A comprehensive Log of your learning, thinking, and doing over the course of the semester
    • You never know what evidence might be useful down the line. It will be nice to have a resource.
WhAT?
  • A document that is updated Every Monday
  • A "Living" Document
    • Meaning you can always go back and update/ add pictures, include sources....
  • A place to show INTENTION and reflection
HOW?
  • Using the assignments tab in teams:
    • Fill out ALL QUESTIONS, EVERY WEEK
    • Upload the appropriate amount of pictures to show the work you completed
    • As you develop your own maker's projects, you can modify as appropriate
  • Think of this document like a blog or recipe
    • You want to provide enough information that someone could take your document and follow the same steps/process
  • PICTURES ARE A MUST!!
    • Plan to take at least 3 pictures everyday!!
    • with people doing a multitude of different projects, this is the best evidence. Without this you WILL lose Points for your weekly grade.
